Sarah Robinson of Wesson and Mattie Avants and Alexis Givens of Bogue Chitto are ready to play. All-Star Fastpitch Softball Games are on tap Saturday at Jones County Junior College in Ellisville and the local trio will play for the South in the Class 1A-2A-3A series, starting at 10 a.m.

General admission tickets are $5 each. After the conclusion of Game 1 Saturday, a 1 p.m. ceremony will recognize players and coaches from the Class 1A-2A-3A and Class 4A-5A-6A dream teams. Game 2 of 1A-2A-3A starts at 1:30. The first of two 4A-5A-6A games follows at around 3 p.m.

Coaching the South 1A-2A-3A team are Robyn Killebrew of Pass Christian and her assistant, Rusty Necaise. Players are rising seniors who will have an opportunity to showcase their skills for numerous college coaches.

Sarah Robinson, a 5-foot-7 third baseman, was one of the leaders in Wesson’s march to the South State 2A championship series. The Lady Cobras (21-8) were eliminated by Enterprise-Clarke, the eventual state runner-up to East Webster.

Robinson batted .312. She hit 5 doubles and 2 triples. She uses a 33-inch, 23-ounce Demarini CF5 bat.

A standout in both slowpitch and fastpitch, Robinson said she prefers fastpitch. “I like fastpitch better because there’s more opportunity for me,” meaning a college scholarship. Mississippi is the only state that still sanctions slowpitch softball as a high school sport.

At third base, Robinson said, “You have to be alert and on your toes,” to handle line drives and bunts.

Asked about her best game, Robinson recalled Wesson’s playoff series against the Union Yellowjackets. “I hurt by (left) hand in the first round of the playoffs. I wanted to play real bad. I had three or four hits.”

Wesson coach Jackie Johnson said Robinson has unlimited potential. “Sarah has a strong arm and she’s very athletic. She can swing for power. She is a good player with a lot of potential.”

Robinson also serves as a cheerleader at Wesson. A devoted animal lover, she wants to become a vet tech after college. She owns 7 dogs, 4 cats, 1 horse and a flock of chickens. She also has 3 older brothers and 3 sisters.

Math is her favorite subject. An honor roll student, Robinson used to wear jersey No. 10 before switching to 18. “My daddy (Dwight Robinson) played for LSU and wore No. 10,” as a quarterback and safety.

Another area standout playing for the South is North Pike pitcher Lauren Wells. Her coach is Bogue Chitto native Sonya Wallace.

All-Star notes:

In the Class 1A-2A-3A series, the North won last year’s opener 1-0 and the South took the finale 11-zip. Since the format was changed in 2006, the South owns a 3-1-3 worksheet.

The North leads the 4A-5A-6A series 3-2-2. Last year the North won the opener 6-3 but the South rebounded to post 7-4 victory in the nightcap.
