Harthorne’s FT saves Enterprise; Lady Jacks win

The pressure was on Enterprise senior guard Pierre HarthorneFriday night. The host Jackets were tied 41-all with the North PikeJaguars with .03 seconds left to play and Harthorne was on the freethrow line with the opportunity to shoot two.

North Pike boys coach Cassels Wilson called a timeout afterHarthorne missed the first shot. Harthorne returned to the freethrow line where he sacked the tie-breaking freebie that gave theJackets a crowd-pleasing 42-41 win over the Jaguars.

Enterprise coach Billy Vaughn repeated what Harthorne told himduring the final timeout.

“Pierre responded,” said Vaughn. “I told him the sun will stillcome up in the morning if he missed it.” Harthrone answered backwith, “I’m gonna make it coach.”

“It’s a lot of pressure for a kid,” added Vaughn.

In the girls game, senior forward Lacey Palomarez led theEnterprise girls with a game-high 26 points on their way to a 65-54win over the Lady Jaguars. Palomarez netted 11 of 12 freethrows.

With 1:22 left in the fourth quarter, North Pike’s Mark Butlernailed a field goal to put the Jaguars on top 41-39. Enterprise’sRufus Allen hit a jumper to tie the game at 41-all with 45 secondsremaining in the game.

“North Pike slowed down the game and worked the ball,” saidVaughn. “They played great defense and made it difficult for us toscore.”

Enterprise (7-3, 4-2) went on top 11-7 over North Pike (2-12,0-6) in the first quarter. At halftime, the Jackets pushed theirlead by seven points, 22-15. Third-quarter play saw the Jaguarsroar back for a 16-9 run and tie the game at 31-apiece.

Kary Brown directed Enterprise with 12 points. Shermaine Vaughnand Allen netted nine points apiece. Harthorne had 6 rebounds andBrown 5. Vaughn had 5 assists and Harthorne 4. Rufus Allen andHarthorne each made 3 steals.

North Pike got 14 points from Mark Butler, 10 points from LarryDowns and eight points from Glover Quinn.

In the girls game, the Lady Jackets (9-1, 5-1) got a boost fromjunior guard Andrea Harthorne who scored 23 points, including seven3-pointers. Joyce Allen followed with 12 points.

Enterprise led 20-11 at the end of the first quarter but NorthPike (10-5, 6-0) came back for an 18-5 run and take a 32-25halftime lead.

“We didn’t play real smart in the first half,” stated CoachVaughn who challenged his girls at halftime. “All of them steppedit up tonight.”

The Lady Jackets returned to the floor fired up in the thirdquarter and outscored the Lady Jaguars 23-11 and retake the lead at48-43 going into the final frame.

High scorer for John Stephens’ North Pike girls was LaQuinta Ardwith 18 points. Brittany Carr fired in 17 points.

Palomarez had 13 rebounds, 5 steals and 6 assists forEnterprise. sAllen had 8 rebounds. and 4 steals. Harthorne had 4assists.

Junior Varsity Boys

The Jaguars hammered the Jackets 44-22. Chad Matthews led with12 points followed by Matthew Mullins with 10 points and CareyPeterson with seven points.

Enterprise got four points from Curtis Smith.

The JV boys game was delayed 51 minutes due to the no-show ofthe scheduled officials. Working the three games were MitchellSmith and Edward Johnson.
