Lady Panthers win division track title

McCOMB – Junior speedster Kenyatta Coleman led the BrookhavenLady Panthers to the Division 6-4A Track Championship Wednesday inC.C. Moore Stadium. Coleman sped to victories in the 100-meter(12.56), 200-meter (26.51) and 400-meter (58.79) events.

The Lady Panthers also claimed two first place trophies in the400 and 800-meter relays. They outscored McComb 135-115 to claimfirst place for the second straight year.

Due to a series of injuries, the Brookhaven boys finished fifthin their division. Sophomore Jimmy Johns led the Panthers with afirst place throw of 140 feet in the discus and a second place inthe shot put. Johns ran a 15.80 in the 110-meter hurdles duringMonday’s preliminaries. In the finals, Johns was second in15.98.

Sophomore Jessie Bowman was 5th in the shot put. Junior JeffreyDow finished 5th in the 800-meter run with a 2:16.29.

Johns and Bowman advance to the regional meet which will be heldSaturday, April 26, at Raymond.

Coleman anchored the Lady Panthers in the relays and was joinedby Alicia Hawkins, Latoria Kerr, Shaleshia Trunner and CandaceTurner. They ran a 1:49.67 in the 800, a 51:21 in the 400 and a4:47 in the 1600 where they finished third.

Also contributing to the Brookhaven team’s victory were AnnaAutman, 2nd in the shot put (34-4) and 3rd in the discus; Kerr, 2ndin the high jump (4-10) and triple jump (32-1) and 3rd in the longjump (15-4); Trunner, 2nd in the 100-meter hurdles (18.65), 4th intriple jump (31-11); Turner, 3rd in the 100-meter hurdles (19.80)and 300-meter hurdles (58.70); Hawkins, 4th in the 100-meters(13.30) and 200-meters (27.91).

The Lady Panthers also got points from Alicia Irvin, 3rd in the1600 meters (6:46.50) and 4th in the 800 (2:57.74); and Ivy Brown,5th in the 1600 (7:00.34) and 6th in the 800 (3:03.44).

The top three finishers in each event advance to the regionalcompetition at Raymond. Brookhaven is coached by Patrick Hardy andRod Henderson.
