Wesson whips Hornets

WESSON — It had been a long time since the Wesson Cobrastotaled over 500 yards on offense. Friday night against the LoydStar Hornets, Wesson posted a big 47-8 Region 6-2A win, finishingthe game with 521 total yards.
Before the start of the game, the Co-Lin Blue Wave Bandperformed a show; then joined the Loyd Star and Wesson bands toplay the National Anthem.
Wesson collected 15 first downs and rushed the football 44 timesfor 471 yards, including 5 touchdowns. The Cobras passed for 50yards and 2 TDs.
“The biggest thing about the game was that we are now 1-0 in theregion,” said Wesson head football coach Tommy Clopton after thegame. “It took us a couple of plays to get ready tonight.”
Loyd Star finished with 8 first downs and 231 yards on 36carries and a touchdown. The Hornets threw for 10 yards to finishthe night with 241 total offensive yards.
“Coach Clopton has his guys playing real good right now,” saidLoyd Star head coach Josh Thibodeaux. “Wesson has all the goodathletes right now. They really have a good football team.”
Wesson (6-1, 1-0) hosts Amite County and Loyd Star (2-4, 0-1)entertains St. Andrew’s for homecoming Friday night in more regionaction.
Powering the Wesson running game was senior running back OthoSmith with 12 carries for 200 yards and 2 touchdowns. Smith leadsthe team with 10 TDs on the season. Following Smith was RoyWilliams with 124 yards on 18 carries and 2 TDs. Quarterback MicahDavis rushed 5 times for 61 yards. Davis completed 2 of 6 passesfor 50 yards including 2 TD passes to Joseph Decker for 47yards.
The Hornets were led by senior running back Hunter Speeg with 10rushes for 116 yards and a touchdown. Garry Johnson rushed 12 timesfor 56 yards. Following with 40 yards on 8 carries was DonaldShorter. Quarterback Jared Rogers finished with 19 yards on 6carries.
Loyd Star opened the game with its best drive of the night,marching to the Wesson 33-yards line before turning the ball overon downs. On the first Wesson play, Smith broke loose down theright side for a 71-yards touchdown. Chris Fink, who was 5 of 7 onPATs, nailed his first extra point to give Wesson a 7-0 lead at the9:30 mark.
The second Cobra score came with 2:03 remaining on a 26-yardburst by Sims for the 14-0 lead.
In the second quarter, Wesson picked up 21 points to push itslead to 34-0 with 1:45 remaining in the first half. Davis hitDecker on a 25-yards pass-play for the 25 yard touchdown, Williamswent on the line for a 1-yard plunge and Smith broke lose for a 32yard TD.
Loyd Star answered back at the 1:27 mark, On the first play ofthe drive, Speeg broke loose down the left sideline and ran for a77-yard touchdown.
Following a scoreless third quarter, the Cobras added 2 moretouchdowns to push their lead to 47-8. On the first play on thequarter, Decker caught his second touchdown pass (22 yards) fromDavis with 11:45 left. With 5:27 left in the game, Williams gotloose and took it in for an 8-yard TD.
Defensively, Wesson linebacker Beau Wilson ledwith 12 tackles. Williams collected 9 tackles. Making 7 stops wasWill Turnbo. Recovering a fumble each were Daniel Watson andMichael Box. Terry Henson picked off a Rogers pass with 21 secondsleft to play.
