Hornets wallop Cathedral; tune up for Lincoln tourney

NATCHEZ — Loyd Star tuned up for the Lincoln County Round-RobinBasketball Tournament by smashing the Cathedral girls and boysTuesday night. In the varsity girls game, guard Jordan Britt pumpedin 30 points as the Lady Hornets whipped Cathedral 55-38. In theboys game, Tyler Williford’s 19 points paced the Hornets in a 75-34rout of the Green Wave.
The Lincoln County Round-Robin tips off Thursday night night atLoyd Star. Bogue Chitto meets West Lincoln at 4 and 5:30 p.m.,followed by Loyd Star vs. Enterprise at 7 and 8:30.
The Hornets (9-1) were led in rebounding byBrent Fells with 9 boards plus 4 steals. Kordae Oatis and Ron Jonesboth had 5 rebounds and Dewayne Branning 4. Russell Brewer made 3steals. Oatis had 5 steals.
“I thought we started shooting the ball really well in thesecond and third quarters,” said Coach Gene (Moochie) Britt. “Thiswas probably our best shooting game, especiallythree-pointers.”
Britt saw 10 of his players put points on the scoreboard. Histeam romped to a 40-15 halftime lead.
Loyd Star hosts the Lincoln County Round-Robin Tournament,starting Thursday night. The Hornets are defending champions.
The Lady Hornets (6-4) were directed inrebounding by Hailey Ratcliff and Britt with 7 boards apiece. Brittalso had 9 steals and 4 assists. Ratcliff made 5 steals. PorshaJones grabbed 6 rebounds. Katie Nettles made 5 steals.
“We got to play everybody,” said Loyd Star coach Lori Britt. “Wehad a good third quarter.”
Coach Britt said senior guard Shara Johnson would probably misstwo more weeks of action due to a torn ligament in her ankle.
Cathedral got 14 points from Mattie Smith.

The 8-1 Loyd Star girls put away Natchez Cathedral 31-12.Shannon Chester sparked Loyd Star with 18 points.
The Loyd Star boys (3-1) fell to Cathedral 28-27. Blake Wilsonled Loyd Star with 10 points.
