The Jackson Wingfield Lady Falcons are a young team with lots oftalent. They showcased their skills Friday night in SinclairGymnasium, whipping Brookhaven’s Lady Panthers 57-40 in a Division6-4A contest.

The Lady Falcons (10-9, 6-1) got 21 points and 10 rebounds fromsophomore forward Dominique Sutton and 13 points and 15 reboundsfrom freshman post Loraine Shoulders. They are 1 game behind McCombin the division race.

“Our girls play hard even though they’re young,” said BobbyGates, Wingfield’s first-year head coach. “We lift weights and werun a lot. We had some tough games early in the season.”

Sutton sacked 17 of her points in the second half, destroyingany Brookhaven hopes of a comeback. The Lady Falcons only had 11turnovers in the victory. They continued to show improvement aftera disastrous division performance at McComb a week earlier, wherethey made 25 first-half turnovers and lost 69-37.

“I guarantee we will play McComb a better game at our place,”said Gates. McComb will host the division tournament Feb.16-20.

Brookhaven head coach Billy Holmes was looking for a better gameout of his Lady Panthers but they struggled on both ends of thefloor. Senior center Anna Autman directed BHS with 19 points and 11rebounds.

Autman’s 9 of 19 field goal accuracy also led the cold-shootingsquad. Kristin McCray added 9 rebounds.

“We only got 15 points from six perimeter players,” said Holmes.”Our guards didn’t’ contain (Wingfield) on defense at all. Wedidn’t make our free throws and we didn’t control anything ondefense.”

It was the second game back for playmaker Brianna Patton who hadmissed the first half of the season due to ACL knee surgery.

“We have got to have some better perimeter shooting,” Holmespointed out. The Lady Panthers only made 1 trey for the game.Ashley Leggett finally connected with 2:02 left to play andWingfield leading 54-36.

Brookhaven (13-12, 2-3) finished with 17 turnovers. The LadyPanthers trailed 21-14 at halftime.

Autman and guard Blanche Wilson scored back-to-back field goalsto start the third quarter, reducing Brookhaven’s deficit to 3points, 21-18. The Lady Falcons responded as Sutton hit 2 straightfield goals and a free throw, pushing the lead to 26-20. ShanaWilson tossed in a trey and it was 29-20.

Brookhaven resumes play Tuesday night, visiting Lawrence Countyfor a division test.
