Lawrence Co. CB has 3 pass thefts in win over Port Gibson

MONTICELLO — Stevie Carr was in the right place at the righttime and he came up with the big plays. The Lawrence County seniorcornerback intercepted three passes, helping the Cougars turn backPort Gibson 33-16 last Friday night in a Region 6-4A contest.

Carr (5-10, 165) also was credited with 5 tackles and 2 passbreakups. That performance has earned him The DAILY LEADER’sDefensive Player of the Week honors.

“Stevie had a good night,” said LCHS head coach Mike Davis. “Heis a hard-nosed, gritty, little country kid from Sontag.”

Davis said Carr has the instincts of a great cornerback. “Steviehas good speed and the knack for the ball, especially if it’s inthe air. He usually plays it pretty close to right. He knows whento jump.”

Considering the height and leaping ability of Port Gibson’s widereceivers, Davis said Carr was doing a lot of things right. “He wasbattling 6-2s and 6-4s that Port Gibson put on the field.”

Cory Keyes coaches the Cougar secondary and praised Carr’s workethic. “Stevie works hard and shows up for practice everyday,” saidKeys. “He has good technique and tries to do things right.”

Carr’s 3 pass interceptions matched his total number of theftslast season. He wears jersey No. 10

Asked about his responsibilities at cornerback, Carr said, “Youhave to set up and watch the quarterback. You have to be ready forzone and man coverage.”

A 2-year starter in the LCHS secondary, Carr praised histeammates. “Our defense is leading the team right now,” said Carr.”I hope our offense can work it out and start clicking.”

Carr plays wide receiver on offense, so that helps him recognizedifferent pass routes. He prefers playing defense.

Also working at cornerback are his younger brother, Curtis Carr,and Murphy Peyton At safety is Tobias Peyton.

Lawrence County’s linebackers are Julius Magee and DontraeCollins. In the front line, the starters are Michael Preston atnose guard, Kelly Pounds at end, Jeremy MacArthur and Ethan Lambertat end, and Aaron Watson at nose guard.

“We have a lot of experience in our secondary,” said Carr. “Ourd-line and linebackers are looking good.

In baseball, Carr plays the outfield for Coach Keyes. “I’veknown him a long time.”.

A hard-working individual, Carr does sandblasting and paintingduring the summer. He missed most of the summer weightlifting andconditioning program which forced him to sit out the jamboree.

Looking at his team, Carr said the Cougars (2-2, 2-0), winnersof two straight regional games, have the potential to capture theregion title. “We are going to try and win the region.”

In his spare time, Carr enjoys deer hunting and bass fishing.”We went bow hunting last Saturday but we didn’t shoot anything. Wesaw some deer.”

Asked about the future, Carr said, “I’m going to collegesomewhere and probably take some course in engineering.” Hisfavorite subject in school is math.

The oldest of 5 children, Carr enjoys playing opposite hissophomore brother at cornerback. They have three youngersisters.
