Green Wave floods BC

BOGUE CHITTO – Senior quarterback CalebUpton showed off his passing skill as the Natchez Cathedral GreenWave flooded Bogue Chitto 61-28 Friday night in a battle ofunbeaten Region 4-1A teams. He carefully dissected the Bobcats bycompleting 24 of 36 passes for 357 yards and 5 touchdowns atjam-packed Troy Smith Field.
“The guys played extremely well, ” said Cathedral coach RonRushing. “We knew that we had to go to the air early in the game toset the tone against Bogue Chitto.
“The Bobcats have a good team and they do play physical,” continuedRushing. “I am really glad for the guys for getting this bigwin.”
In the first quarter, football fans witnessed an air strike asUpton lit up the scoreboard for 27 points with TD tosses of 21, 29,28 and 18 yards to four different receivers.
Bogue Chitto (7-1, 5-1)managed to get on the scoreboard in the first quarter when BrockRoberts connected with Germie Martin for a 52-yard touchdown strikewith 7:21 remaining. TheBobcats were unsuccessful rushing the football for the 2-pointconversion.
Cathedral (8-0, 6-0) added another touchdown to increase the leadto 34-6 in the first quarter as J.D. Ealey rumble 16 yards topaydirt. He also cashed in a 2-point conversion. Lee Fairbanks wassuccessful on 5 of 8 extra point kicks for the Green Wave.
In the second quarter, the air raid quieted down as both teamsplayed smash-mouth football. Ealey captured his second touchdown ashe plowed through for 4-yard run with 7:34 remaining.
The Bobcats managed to muster some momentum in the second quarteras they drained the clock and finished with 9-yard touchdown striketo Martin from Roberts with 0:30 left. James Blackwell punchedthrough for Bogue Chitto’s 2-point conversion. Cathedral led 40-14at the half.
During halftime, fans witnessed the Bogue Chitto pee-weecheerleaders and the Green Wave dance squad performances.
In the third quarter, the heavyweight bout continued as both teamsscored 14 points apiece. Upton tossed his fifth touchdown of thenight as he connected with Daniel Huffines for a 12-yard strikewith 10:25 remaining.
Bogue Chitto answered with a 17-yard scramble from senior runningback Colton McClendon with 3:57 remaining.
Ishmeal Blackmon provided assistance to Cathedral as he returned akickoff 70 yards for a touchdown with 3:43 left.
McClendon punched in BC’s final touchdown as he plowed through fora 9-yard run with 0:29 left.
In the fourth quarter, Cathedral cashed in their final touchdownwith 10:00 remaining as Ealey stumbled 3 yards to paydirt.
“We did not come out and play from the start,” said BC coach GarethSartin. “We had the opportunities to make this into a game but wefailed make the plays. BC had 4 turnovers, including 3 fumbles.
“Cathedral is really good on offense,” said Sartin. “Hopefully, wecan learn from our mistake and regroup to do better againstStringer.”
Bogue Chitto will be on the road Friday as they prepare to battlethe Stringer Red Devils. Cathedral returns home to host the DexterBulldogs in D’Evereaux Stadium. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
McClendon was the offensive leader for Bogue Chitto’s ground attackwith 18 carries for 158 yards and two touchdowns. Brandon Wellscontributed 12 rushes for 89 yards. Roberts completed 5 of 15passes for 97 yards and one interception. Martin was the topreceiver with 3 catches for 69 yards and two touchdowns.
Huffines was the leading receiver for the Green Wave with 6 catchesfor 104 yards. Ealey was in charge of the ground attack with 11rushes for 56 yards.
Defensively, Jermaine Blackwell and Roberts led the Bobcats with 8tackles apiece. Martin provided 7 stops.
Mathew Rymer and Rodney Hall were the defensive leaders forCathedral with 10 tackles apiece.
