Lady Panthers win; boys fall to McComb

McCOMB – The Brookhaven Lady Panthers got a game-high 27 pointsfrom Dandy Dozen senior forward Swayze Black, powering Ole Brook toa 75-57 win over the McComb Lady Tigers Friday night in Division6-4A basketball action. In the varsity boys game, McComb’s Tigerstorched Brookhaven with eight 3-point baskets; authoring a 69-56Division 6-4A victory over the Panthers.
With the win, the Lady Panthers improve to 9-1 overall and 1-0in division play. The Lady Tigers dropped to 7-6 and 1-1. On theboys side, McComb moves to 9-2 and 2-0. Brookhaven fell to 4-7 and0-1
Brookhaven continues in division play Tuesday night, hostingPort Gibson.

The Lady Tigers, coached by Angelia Johnson, fought off an early8-4 deficit to take a 20-15 lead into the second period. McComb ledby as many as 7 points in the opening half, before trailing 37-32at the intermission break.
Johnson’s crew got a charge from junior guard Portia Craft. Shesacked 13 of her team-high 19 points in the first half. Theirpatience on offense was key in the half.
Both teams nearly played an even third period, but Ole Brookcarried a 54-51 advantage into the final frame.
A 21-6 Brookhaven fourth quarter would put this game away.McComb was unable to convert numerous close-range baskets, and theturnover bug hurt the Lady Tigers down the stretch.
The Lady Panthers, coached by Freda Craft, got support fromBlack with 7 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals. Dandy Dozen centerNikki Byrd followed with 19 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists and 5blocked shots. Whitley Shannon tallied 16 points and 2 steals, withAshley Gayten tossing in 12 points and grabbing 7 rebounds.
McComb also got 15 points from Shanekqua Bibbs and 12 pointsfrom Alisha Rayborn.
McComb 69, Brookhaven 56
Neither team shot the basketball with any consistency. Each teamshot under the 40-percent clip for the game. It would be theTigers’ 8 treys that take would aid their winning cause.
McComb, coached by Hilton Harrell, led 19-10 after one quarterand 33-29 at halftime; despite several attempts to cut theirdeficit down. Anthony Daniels led the Tiger charge with 14first-half points.
Brookhaven would not lay down for the Tigers. After a sluggishfirst half, the Panther offense came to life in the third andfourth period. Ole Brook cut their deficit to a single point on 3different occasions in the final 16 minutes. Missed opportunitiesand turnovers down the stretch would hurt the Panthers in theloss.
Harrell’s ballclub was led by senior forward Derrick Harris with20 points and 11 rebounds. Daniels finished with 16 points, withLadarius White tossing in 10 points and dishing out 3 assists.
Ole Brook, coached by Ronald Hines, got a game-high 21 points,11 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals from Charles (Bobo) Rancifer.Marcus McGee pumped in 13 points and 6 rebounds.
