Evacuee dies in shooting at hotel

Police are investigating the homicide of a Louisiana man who wasfound at a Brookhaven hotel earlier today, authorities said.

Police responding to a 911 call of a shooting at 12:56 a.m.Friday found a man on the ground in the breezeway outside ofLincoln Inn and Suites, Assistant Chief Nolan Jones said. The manhad been shot one time.

The man was transported by ambulance to King’s Daughters MedicalCenter, where he later died, Jones said.

The victim has been identified, but police are withholding hisname pending notification of next of kin.

Jones said the victim was a coastal evacuee from Louisiana. Theman was not staying in Brookhaven, but had been living in thesurrounding area, he said.

Jones could not say why the victim was at the hotel lastnight.

“The information we have now is extremely sketchy,” he said.”We’re still in the early stages of the investigation.”

A motive for the crime is still unknown, Jones said.

“We’re interviewing witnesses. No arrests have been made at thistime,” he said.

Jones said investigators today are following leads and meetingwith witnesses and family members to determine the victim’smovements Thursday night and early this morning.
