Sykes homers, leads Co-Lin past East Miss.

WESSON — The Co-Lin Wolves kicked off a three-game seriesSunday with a 14-10 win over the East Mississippi Lions atSullivan.

The game was close in the early innings. East Mississippi wentup 2-0 in the top of the second inning but Co-Lin came back withfour runs in the bottom for a 4-3 lead.

The Lions went ahead 5-4 in the top of the third with threeruns. It was the final time East Mississippi would lead in thegame.

The Wolves came back to go ahead 6-5 on second baseman JustinSykes’ two-run homer over the left center field fence

In the bottom of the sixth, Co-Lin exploded for six runs and a12-5 lead. Highlighting the inning was a two-run home run byshortstop Garrett Jones of Natchez Cathedral.

East Mississippi scored two runs in the top of the fifth to cutthe deficit to 12-7 and three in the sixth to trim Co-Lin’s lead tofour runs, 14-10.

In the final inning, Co-Lin reliever Te Riley struck out twobatters and walked one as right fielder Joe Nickels of EastMississippi grounded out to end the game.

Freshman right-hander Scotty Smith of Brookhaven started thefirst three innings for the Wolves and allowed 5 runs on 7 hits,struck out 2 batters and walked 1. Posting the win in relief wasWill Buckels of Franklin County with 5 runs allowed on 7 hits, 1strikeout and 1 walk in three innings.

The losing hurler was starter Ricky McCrary (3-2) with 10 runsallowed on 11 hits, 3 strikeouts, 2 walks and 1 hit batter. Workingthe final three innings was Barrett Coco with 5 runs allowed on 5hits, 2 strikeouts and 1 walk.

East Mississippi committed 4 errors to Co-Lin’s 3. Both teamsleft 7 runners stranded on base.

At the plate, sophomore left fielder Jody Britt of Loyd Star ledwith 3 doubles and a single. Xavier Qualls doubled twice. PatrickWilliams and Matthew Schexnayder collected two doubles apiece.Doubling and singling was Ben Sandifer. Josh Logan and CodyCunningham hit safely.

Powering East Mississippi with a two-run homer and a single wasBrandon Mabry. Ripping 4 singles was Tyler Maxwell. Justin Faulknerdoubled twice and singled. Richmond Alexander belted a double and asingle. Chase Goolsby doubled.

Co-Lin will host another three-game series today at SullivanField. The Wolves host East Mississippi at noon then Kishwaukee4:30.
