The Rev. Jerry Durr said it was 3 a.m. Saturday when Brookhavenpolice called him at his home to tell him the window of the truckat the Brookhaven Outreach Ministries was smashed.

Someone had thrown a large stone through it, he said.

“They took a large stone and threw it in our windshield and bustedit out,” he said. “It was a big stone. It was huge.”

Durr said he can’t figure out why anyone would want to damage theproperty of a ministry whose workers do their best to make sure theneeds of the community are met.

“I think it was just random kids passing through,” he said. “Itmust have been some bad kids. I don’t know what else to say, somethat their mind wasn’t in the right place when they perpetratedthat act.”

This isn’t the first time something like this has happened either,he said. His own daughter’s car has had the window broken out witha large rock in front of a church one time, and the door was brokenout of the last Outreach location as well.

Durr said all he can figure is that the crime was a result of boredkids with too much time on their hands.

“A lot of kids pass down the street, going to different events, andsometimes we’ll have things like this happen,” he said. “I guessthey’re just passing by and I guess they’ll just do mischievousthings, kids are like that sometimes especially when they’re notbeing brought up in the way of the Lord … not to destroy otherpeople’s property.”

The windshield has been fixed, Durr said, out of Outreach fundsTuesday morning, as the ministry prepares for its back-to-schoolevent Friday.

Durr said he just hopes that whoever vandalized his truck will becaught so they won’t do it to anyone else.

“The police have been so helpful and encouraging, I thank God forthem, and I pray that we find the people who did this so they canput a stop to it,” he said.
