Wesson captures AAA Subdistrict

Following a 30-minute rain delay, the Wesson and Lincoln CountyAmerican League All-Stars settled down to battle it out for theDixie Youth Baseball AAA North Subdistrict Six TournamentChampionship at Keystone Park Wednesday night.
Wesson hurler C.J. Viramontez struck out 3 batters, walked 3 andallowed 6 hits in leading visiting Wesson to a muddy, 7-1 win overthe Americans and capture the subdistrict title. Wesson wentunbeaten in the double-elimination tourney.
In last night’s South Subdistrict title game, McComb held offWalthall County for an 8-7 win.
Wesson will host McComb Friday night, beginning at 6 p.m. forthe best-of-three series. The teams travel to McComb Saturdaynight
“C.J. Viramontez did an excellent job,” said Wesson head coachJerry Hood. “Mack Smith homered. We got a double from TrentNettles. All of the kids played good.”
The game was scoreless for three innings. Wesson scored 3 runsin the top of the fourth for a 3-0 lead. Mack Smith highlighted theinning with a 2-run homer.
The Americans answered in the bottom of the fourth when BrettCalcote scored one run to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Wesson added 4 runs in the top of the fifth to push its lead to7-1.
“We have hit the ball harder,” said Lincoln County American headcoach Winky Brown. “We had a few errors. They are a great set ofkids to be with. They want to learn. They want to get better.”
Contributing to the Wesson win with 2 singles each were JonahHenderson and Connor Lowery. Viramontez doubled. Jase Alexander andBolon Tadlock hit safely.
The losing pitcher was Caleb Yarborough with 5 strikeouts, 2walks and 6 hits allowed. Working the final 2 innings was J.P.Jackson who fanned 2 batters and allowed 3 hits.
Offensively, the Americans were led by Yarborough with 2singles. Caleb Brown, Daniel Forehand, Tanner Allen and ChrisitanBurgess singled.
Natchez wins Majors
At Duncan Park, host Natchez beat Copiah County 6-0 Wednesdaynight in the finals of the Dixie Youth Major League NorthSubdistrict Six Tournament. Natchez will play McComb for thedistrict title in a best-of-three series.
