Loyd Star rips Collins, Raleigh

HATTIESBURG — The Loyd Star Hornet baseball team won two gamesSaturday in the Hattiesburg Tournament. Loyd Star dumped Collins7-4 in the first game and Collins 11-3 in the second contest.
Today at Oak Grove, Loyd Star (6-3) faces Oak Grove at 5 p.m.and Escambia, Fla. at 7:30.
Loyd Star 7, Raleigh 4
In the first game, Patrick Holcomb (2-1) finished the final 51/3 innings with 2 runs allowed on 7 hits and 4 strikeouts. StarterJustin Whatley worked the first 1 2/3 inning with 2 runs allowed on1 hits, 2 strikeouts and 4 hit batters. Kyle Westbrooks was thelosing pitcher.
Raleigh (3-5) went up 2-1 in the top of the second inning. LoydStar answered back with five runs in the bottom to take a 6-2 lead.In the fourth, the Hornets added one more run for a 7-2 edge.Raleigh added two mores runs in the top of the sixth.
“It was good to get the win,” said Loyd Star head coach SydneyWheatley. “Our intensity wasn’t there. We had some mental mistakes(three errors).”
Powering the Hornets at the plate with a home run and a singlewas senior catcher Matthew Delaughter. Jared Britt and Blake Porterdoubled. Singling were David Cuevas and Cody Cunningham.
Loyd Star 11, Collins 3
“We played much better against Collins,” said Wheatley. “Ourpitchers pitched well.”
Picking up the win was starter Tyler Williford (1-1) with 2 runsallowed on 4 hits, 5 strikeouts and 2 walks in 2 1/3 innings. KyleJames worked the next 1 2/3 innings, followed by Cunningham in thefinal three innings with 5 strikeouts, 2 walks and 1 hitallowed.
At the plate, Austin Fagan led the Hornets with a home run and atriple. Delaughter doubles twice. Whatley ripped two hits. Hittingsafely were Cunningham, Williford and Cuevas.
“We know we have to play well,” added Wheatley. “We want to playthese schools.”
