Services for Dorman L. Dowdy of Brookhaven are 2 p.m., Thursday,May 17, at First Baptist Church with burial in Riverwood MemorialPark.
Visitation is today from 5-9 p.m. at Brookhaven FuneralHome.
Mr. Dowdy, 74, died May 15, 2001, at Baptist Medical Center inJackson. He was born in Union County on April 7, 1927, to AndrewDowdy and Dolly Todd Dowdy. He received his B.S. degree fromMemphis State.
He taught history and coached high school basketball andbaseball in Union County for 10 years. He retired as countyexecutive director of the Farm Service Agency, USDA. He was amember of Brookhaven Exchange Club for 40 years, serving aspresident, treasurer, and was president-elect for 2001. He wasinvolved in coaching young people in baseball, peewee football, andpeewee basketball in Brookhaven city leagues for 10 years. He was aNavy veteran of WWII, serving as Yeoman Third Class USNR. He was amember of First Baptist Church, where he served as an usher formany years.
Preceding him in death were his parents.
Survivors are his wife, Virginia Dowdy of Brookhaven; his sonand daughter-in-law, Rodney and Carol Dowdy of Columbus; hisdaughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Mark Cook of Dallas, Texas; hisbrother and sister-in-law, Maymond and Marie Dowdy of Ponotoc; hissister, Anna Lee Shows of Thaxton; and his grandsons, Benjamin,Nicholas, Michael and Matthew Dowdy, Justin Thurman, and DylanCook.
