SUMMIT — The Loyd Star Hornets came back to beat the host NorthPike Jaguars 91-87 in overtime Monday night and set the stage for amatchup with the Tylertown Chiefs in tonight’s boys championshipgame of the North Pike Tip-Off Tournament. Game time is 8:45p.m.

Tylertown got past Wesson 68-61 in the earlier game.

Wesson battles North Pike at 5:45 in the losers bracket.

Loyd Star 91, North Pike 87

The game was tied 78-all at the end of regulation. North Pikeand Loyd Star were allowed one timeout apiece with four minutes toplay. The Hornets outscored the Jaguars 13-9 to pull out the win.Drew Case nailed a three-pointer for the Hornets that gave them an88-87 lead with 51 seconds left. Tyler Williford scored on a layupfor a 90-87 lead with 11 seconds remaining. Dewayne Branning hit afree throw for the insurance 91-87 victory in the final 5.5seconds.

“Overall I thought we played well,” said Loyd Star boys coachGene “Moochie” Britt who had sweated through his shirt. “I was wellpleased. We can get better. I think we’ll have a real good team. Itwas a great game.”

The Hornets went up by three points, 36-33, at the half. Goinginto the final frame. the Jags had taken a 57-53 lead.

Powering Loyd Star with a game-high 34 points, including 4three-pointers, was Williford. Kordae Otis pumped in 15 points,including four 3-pointers. Drew Case fired in 14 points. Followingwith 10 points each were Branning and Brent Fells. Fells and Otisled off the backboards with 9 rebounds apiece. Otis also made 4steals and had 6 assists.

For Coach Keith Russ’ North Pike team, Landon Morgan was thegame-high scorer with 35 points, nailing 8 three-pointers. JoshuaThompson followed with 20 points. Finishing with 13 points wasTrace Abdul-Hadi.

Tylertown 69, Wesson 61

For the first two quarters, Wesson and Tylertown wereneck-and-neck, tied 17-17 in the first quarter and 34-34 at thehalf. The third quarter was disastrous for the Cobras who wereoutscored 15-7.

“We had a flat third quarter with just seven points,” saidWesson head coach Ron Kessler about the difference in the game. “Iwas proud of our effort. I’m glad to start out the season with agood tough team.”

Leading Wesson with 24 points, including 4 three-pointers, wasWade Williams. Blake Pickett and Mason Warren pumped in 14 pointsapiece.

Tylertown was led by Revas Jackson with 21 points. Revas Jacksonfollowed with 14 points. Finishing with 11 points was TravisConerly.
