BA girls capture consolation

The host Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars captured the MPSA ClassAA State Tournament Consolation Game Saturday for third place inJohn R. Gray Gymnasium. BA advances to the Overall Tournament nextweek at A.E. Wood Coliseum on the Mississippi College campus.
Brookhaven Academy (34-6) used strong rebounding to secure a40-24 win over the Oak Forest Lady Yellow Jackets. The victoryavenged a 43-42 loss to the Jackets in the South State AATournament finals a week ago.
In the championship game, Leake posted a 39-36 victory overMarshall.
Named to the All-Tournament team from BA were Nicole Smith andTerah Winborne.

“We responded really well,” said BA girls coach Barry Gray tothe physical contest with Oak Forest. “The measure of our team iswhen we got knocked down, we came right back.”
Powering the Lady Cougars with a double-double, 11 points and 10rebounds; was 5-11 sophomore post Anna Katelyn Mangold. NicoleSmith, a 5-6 senior guard, pumped in 10 points, grabbed 7 reboundsand had 3 assists. Freshman guard Terah Winborne made 4 steals andhad 4 assists.
Oak Forest took an early 4-0 lead before BA got on thescoreboard at the 4:09 mark in the first quarter. Smith scored 7 ofher 10 points in the first quarter to help the Lady Cougars take a9-7 lead.
In the second quarter, BA outscored Oak Forest 10-6 to push itslead to 19-13 at halftime.
Going into the fourth quarter, the Lady Cougars held a 10-point,27-17 lead over the Lady Jackets.
BA reserve Summer Calhoun came off the bench and nailed a treywith no time left.
The Yellow Jackets had no players in double figures. CassieBennett led with 8 points and 4 rebounds. Lauren Brumfield finishedwith 6 points and 4 rebounds.
Leake 39, Marshall 36
Leading Leake with 14 points was Jenny Wilbanks. Scoring 12points was Emily Kea.
Marshall was led by Traci Rodgers with 18 points. Emily Burkfollowed with 7 points.
