More than 1,000 women took part in this year’s Girls’ Night Out, which has been deemed a very successful shopping event.
Kay Burton, marketing director of the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce, said 1,100 tickets were sold for Thursday’s shopping extravaganza, which is about the same that was sold last year.
“It seemed to be the same number of people but better shopping,” Burton said.
Burton said the biggest improvement seemed to be registration. Set up in the parking lot by Railroad Park, event goers were able to drive through and get their T-shirts with little delay.
The Chamber ran out of shirts and is ordering about 200 more. Burton said vouchers were handed out and she expects the T-shirts to be available the week after the Fourth of July.
Many shoppers wound down their shopping afternoon and evening with the annual ice cream social and reflected on the good time they had.
Donna Wilkerson said Girls Night Out functioned as a small reunion for her and some high school friends.
“We used this evening and this afternoon to revive our laughter and friendship,” she said.
One of Wilkerson’s friends, Patty Hollingsworth, agreed.
“My favorite part was the refreshing fellowship,” she said. “We really enjoyed the ice cream social.”
Others ran into old friends at the different stores.
“I enjoyed just the meeting and greeting,” Brenda Evans. “I saw people I hadn’t seen in a long time.”
Evans said this was the third year she attended Girls Night Out, but this year was special because she got to bring her mom. Her daughter also came along, making it a three-generational shopping excursion.
“If you didn’t come this year, last year or the year before, you should try to next year,” she said.
As this year’s Girls’ Night Out came to a close, some inquired about future events in Brookhaven.
“The big question my husband wants to know: when is it going to be men’s night out,” Wilkerson said.
