Services for Moses Leroy Bates Sr., of Brookhaven, are 11 a.m.Saturday, Feb. 27, at Alexander Junior High Auditorium inBrookhaven, with burial in Carver Heights Cemetery. R.E. TylerFuneral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation is Friday from noon until 8 p.m. at the funeral home,with family present from 6 until 8 p.m.
Mr. Bates, 87, died Feb. 19, 2010, at his residence. He was born inLincoln County on Nov. 14, 1922, to the Rev. Charlie Bates andPearlie Stovall Bates.
He was retired from his work as a self-employed contractor. He wasa member of St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church in Brookhaven.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his sons, Willie E. BatesSr., Jules A. Bates Sr., Ellary Bates and Turone F. Bates Sr.; hisdaughter, Deborah Bates; his brothers, Jonas Bates, J.C. Bates,C.B. Bates, and Sinclair Brister; and his stepbrother, T.C. May, ofBrookhaven.
Survivors are his wife, Lucille Hill Bates, of Brookhaven; hissons, Paul L. Bates Sr., of Hazlehurst, Terry L. Bates Sr., MosesL. Bates Jr. and Darryl A. Bates, all of Brookhaven, and Jerry D.Bates Sr., of Crystal Springs; his daughters, Annie Pearl Bates, ofRancho Cucomonga, Calif., Minister Evelyn Rawls, of Brookhaven,Beverly Ann Smith, of Jackson, Sharon Smith, of Union Church, andBessie Marie Evans, of Brookhaven; his brothers, W.R. Brister, ofWichita, Kan., and Charlie E. Bates, of Jackson; his sisters, GraceBlackwell, Daisy Fairman and Gladys Calhoun, all of Bogue Chitto,Joanne Robinson, of Greenwood, and Diane Buie, of Byram; his 101grandchildren; 182 great-grandchildren; and 21great-great-grandchildren.
