The results of Tuesday’s municipal elections in Brookhaven are now official, with city election commissioners certifying the election on Wednesday.

Approximately 22 affidavit ballots were also dealt with Wednesday, said Bonita Bullock, one of the three city election commissioners.

About nine ballots didn’t appear to belong to registered voters (or, in some cases, even to city residents), Bullock said. The rest were counted.

On the whole, election officials are pleased with the way the election was conducted Tuesday.

“I thought the election went smoothly,” said City Clerk Mike Jinks. “Having the electronic machines was a step up.”

Brookhaven was one of six municipalities in Mississippi in which elections were monitored by the U.S. Justice Department. Jinks said, based on what he was told, monitors did not identify any significant problems.

“The feedback and comments I got from the DOJ people was that there was no real problems,” the city clerk said. “No out of the ordinary problems, just human mistakes.”

Approximately 3,600 voters participated in Brookhaven’s municipal elections, including election day votes and absentee ballots.

Brookhaven has approximately 9,000 registered voters, so this year saw about a 40 percent turnout for city elections.

However, officials have estimated that the city’s voter rolls are bloated and overstate the number of registered voters still living in the city.

In the run-up to this year’s elections, voter cards were mailed out to every registered voter.

At least 700-800 were returned by the U.S. Postal Service, Jinks reported earlier this year.

According to Jinks, voters whose cards were returned will be placed on inactive status. Inactive voters can still vote (with proof of residence) but if they remain inactive through two federal elections, their name can be purged from the voting rolls.
