MONTICELLO – A Lawrence County man shot at two intruders early Tuesday morning, killing one and sending the other fleeing in a getaway vehicle.
Lawrence County Sheriff Joel Thames said David Maxwell, of 210 Henry Cox Road, Monticello, shot Matthew James Javor, 30, of 3051 Greenwood Road, Ruth, in the kitchen of his house after Maxwell’s dog alerted him of an intruder.
Upon being called to the scene at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, Lawrence County deputies found Javor lying on Maxwell’s back porch. He was pronounced dead on arrival by Coroner Sidney Fortenberry, Thames said.
After firing at Javor, Maxwell told authorities he exited his house and shot at an apparent accomplice who was waiting in a getaway vehicle. The vehicle sped away, and Maxwell then called 911, Thames said.
The accomplice’s vehicle was described as a light-colored step-side pickup. Thames says his department has a suspect in mind at this time, but he declined to release the name of the alleged accomplice.
Javor was unarmed, according to Thames.
Investigators from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation were called in to assist with the investigation, Thames said, adding that Maxwell was not injured in the incident.
