Freshmen quarterback Kendarius Story rushed for 121 yards and scored a touchdown to help the Pisgah Dragons roast the West Lincoln Bears 37-0 Friday night on Perry Miller Field for homecoming. The Dragons scorched the ground against the Bears for 293 yards total offense.

“This was a weird night,” said Pisgah coach Michael Grandberry. “Both teams had a hard time fighting and adjusting through these delays and wet conditions.

“I was very pleased with my guys’ effort,” continued Grandberry. “They managed to maintain their focus through all of that and ran the ball really well.”

West Lincoln’s football fans showed their devoted loyalty Friday night as they gathered in the heavy rain to enjoy the homecoming festivities and cheer the Bears to their first victory of the season.

The Bears (0-4) and Dragons (2-3) came out and provided a great defensive battle in the first half as the players had fun playing in the rain and mud.

In the first quarter, Pisgah set the tone of the game with a defensive tackle for a safety on the Bears first opening drive with 8:46 remaining. Both teams struggled through most of the first and second quarters to get their offense going in the wet conditions.

Late in the second quarter, West Lincoln managed to march down the field on a good long drive and was threatening to score, until a lightening delay killed the drive and momentum with 5:00 left.

During the delay, West Lincoln’s principal Jason Case elected to go ahead with the homecoming presentation in the gym. After the brief intermission, play resumed with the Bears trying to regain that momentum they had before Pisgah’s defense forced a turnover on downs.

The Dragons scored their first touchdown in closing seconds of the second quarter, when Demarkis Wilson powered in a one-yard run to paydirt. Wilson also rushed in the two-point conversion to give Pisgah a 10-0 lead with 0:31 left before halftime.

In the second half, the Dragons managed to take control of the slugfest. Senior running back Grant Watkins directed the charge with two touchdown scoring drives of 25 and 21 yards in the third quarter. Hayden Miller finished three-of-four on the extra point kicks.

The Dragons punched in another touchdown late in the third quarter, when Kendarius Story sprinted 15 yards to paydirt with 0:55 remaining.

Senior receiver Ben Williams cashed in Pisgah’s final touchdown in the fourth quarter on a one-yard plunge with 4:11 left.

“We came out and played really well in the first half until the lightening delay killed our momentum,” said West Lincoln coach Willie Brumfield. “We struggled through the rest of the game to get our offensive rhythm back.

Everything that could have went wrong, happened,” stated Brumfield. “Overall, I was pleased with the guys’ efforts. Now we must regroup and keep working hard. Eventually the break will come our way.”

Senior quarter Jonah King was the offensive leader for the Bears, completing four-of-15 passes for 58 yards.

Javian MacKabee paced West Lincoln’s ground attack with 37 yards on 16 carries

Ty Forman was the top receiver with two catches for 37 yards. He also threw one pass to Matthew Allred for 35 yards.

Watkins helped the Dragons offensive ground attack with six rushes for 75 yards.

Defensively, Jamin Conrad led the Bears with 18 tackles. Lofton Sills provided 17 stops. Tyler Moak contributed 16 tackles and recovered a fumble. Will Griffin had 12 stops.

The Dragons were directed by Aidan Bradford and Wilson with pass interceptions. Nathaniel Smith recovered a fumble.

West Lincoln visits Farmerville, La. to battle the Union Christian Lions (1-4). Pisgah returns home to host the Enterprise-Lincoln Yellow Jackets (0-4). Kickoff is Friday night at 7 p.m.
