MONTICELLO – The Lawrence County Lady Cougars edged the West Lincoln Lady Bears in a 5-3 nail-biter Tuesday night, in a battle of two of the top slow pitch softball teams in the area.

Lawrence County got just 5 hits in the game, but put together a 4-run rally in the bottom of the second, thanks in part to a couple of West Lincoln miscues, to get the win. Jamie Martin and Cierra Horton each had 2 hits for the Lady Cougars. Alyssa Pendergrass had 1.

West Lincoln, on the other hand, banged out 12 hits against Lady Cougar pitcher Barri Rogers, but left a trainload of runners on the basepaths, as Lawrence County came up with some big defensive plays.

Heather Moak led the Lady Bears with 3 hits. Bentley Sills, Malori Hall and Hanna Moak got 2 hits each. Layton Sills, Alli Mullins and Brianna Fauver also hit safely. All 3 West Lincoln runs came in the top of the fifth, when the Lady Bears put together 5 hits.

“We didn’t swing it very well tonight,” said Lady Cougar coach Meleah Howard, “but we made a lot of good defense plays that got us out of jams. That was the key to the game.”

Lawrence County improved to 9-0-1 on the season, the Lady Cougars’ lone blemish being an 8-inning 2-2 tie against West Lincoln. The Lady Bears fell to 5-3-1, with 2 of their 3 losses coming to LCHS.
