The history presentation programs return this Thursday for the Lincoln County Historical and Genealogical Society. “Mayors of Brookhaven: The Early Years” is a presentation of the people that have lead Brookhaven since it was founded.

LCHGS President Joe Brown and researcher Sue Dorman have created a program to talk about the mayors starting in 1858 and going up to 1900. This is the first part of a series that will cover all the Brookhaven mayors.

The year was 1870 and Brookhaven had just been named the county seat of a new county named Lincoln. Governor Alcorn had appointed a new mayor named William Shakespear Horr.

October 23, 1870 an unknown person threw a brickbat through the office window striking the mayor on the head and knocking him unconscious. He remained unconscious until Nov. 23 when he died.  Multiple people were arrested for the crime, but the outcome is a mystery.

“We are looking forward to our first society presentation this year,” said Brown. “Sue Dorman has spent years researching the mayors. We hope people will come out and see this unique presentation. We will be starting our 2025 membership drive at this meeting.”

The Lincoln County Historical and Genealogical Society will give a free presentation, “Mayors of Brookhaven: The Early Years,” at the Jimmy Furlow Senior Citizen Center, 201 South First St., at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 30.  Free refreshments will be served.
