WESSON — A five goal thriller ended in extra-time Thursday night as Wesson completed a comeback to beat West Lincoln 3-2. Both teams played hard in the match.
Wesson’s Adyson Dowd scored on a low shot to give the Cobras the first lead in the match with 13 minutes left in the first half. West Lincoln’s Anna Jones scored to equalize and make it 1-1 with 26 minutes left in the second half.
Kinsley Smith scored for West Lincoln to put the Bears up 2-1 with 15 minutes left in the second half. She hugged teammates in celebration.
Wesson pushed for an equalizing goal late in the match and it came. A ball played over the top created the chance Wesson needed. West Lincoln’s keeper saved the first shot but there was no saving the follow-up shot from the foot of Courtney Carr. Her last minute goal tied the match for Wesson.
“It was amazing. It was very good,” Carr said. “It was really Lilly who helped me with the pass. It was a lot of teamwork. It felt amazing and I love how it brought energy to the field.”
The Cobras almost won the game in the closing seconds of the match. Two successive corner kicks flashed through the box but no one could get a finishing touch. Both teams were headed to extra-time.
Zoey Ashley scored the winning goal for Wesson on a wild goalline scramble where her touch put the ball over the line four minutes into the first half of extra-time.
Carr said the team’s communication and passing helped them win the match. The team started off strong, had a rough patch in the second half but finished the game with the same intensity they had at the start.
It will take everything they have to beat Loyd Star Friday night. The Cobras lost 5-0 in the first meeting between the two sides.
“I think we are ready and we can pull through. It really gives us the energy and courage we need so we have a shot,” Carr said.
The senior is savoring every game with her teammates. She plans to attend Co-Lin after graduation and study nursing so she can help others.
“This season has been amazing. I love my team. They have been good at energy and communicating,” Carr said. “I will miss the girls and our friendship. I’m going to miss that. I am going to Co-Lin for nursing. It gives me joy to help make other people’s days better.”
West Lincoln is currently in fourth place and would likely need a win over Bogue Chitto next week to reach the playoffs.
