JACKSON — A bill named after fallen officer Troy Floyd was introduced in the Mississippi House of Representatives on January 16. Floyd was killed in the line of duty last August in Summit where he was an officer. Lincoln County mourned the loss of a native son in the days following.
Rep. Vince Mangold and Becky Currie are co-authors of the Troy Floyd Act along with Rep. Sam Mims, Rep. Angela Cockerham and principal author Rep. Daryl Porter. Under the act, Mississippi Development Authority would be authorized to award grants to certain municipalities to obtain life saving equipment. Life Saving Equipment is defined in the bill as bullet proof vests, radio equipment, first aid supplies, wound treatment supplies and equipment.
Small municipalities are defined in the bill as those with a population of 3,000 or fewer. Awarded grant funds can not exceed $50,000 to a singular municipality.
The act would take effect on July 1, 2025 if it passes. The bill was referred to municipalities and Appropriations A committees in the house.
