Dangerous cold continues after snow day

BROOKHAVEN — The National Weather Service warns dangerous cold weather continues through tonight into Thursday. Lincoln County Emergency Management Agency opened a warming shelter due to the dangerous cold temperatures.
The warming shelter will be at the FEMA building, also called the Brookhaven building, located at 1154 Beltline Drive. Doors will open at 4 p.m. and the warming shelter will remain open until Thursday, January 23 at 1o a.m. People taking shelter at the FEMA building will need to bring all necessary food, medications and supplies. No pets are allowed in the building.
A cold weather advisory went into effect from 6 p.m. Sunday to 9 a.m. Thursday. Temperatures will continue very low with colder wind chills which could lead to hypothermia and frostbite with prolonged exposure.
The high Wednesday is 36 degrees before dropping down to a low of 18 tonight. Thursday’s high will reach 42 but the low will drop again to 22. Friday will heat up to 55 and drop to a low of 21. Saturday’s low will finally be above freezing at 35 after a forecast high of 52. Rain chances will pick up Saturday night at 30 percent and increase to 60 percent Sunday.
