Pair of bills introduced to fund home projects

JACKSON — A pair of bills were introduced in the Mississippi state senate Friday which could fund projects close to home. One of those bills is for Brookhaven and the other for Camp Kamassa in Copiah County. 

Lincoln County’s Sen. Jason Barrett introduced SB2112 to help fund infrastructure projects. The appropriation bill would direct $4,725,000 to the City of Brookhaven. According to the legislation, $1,750,000 would go towards defraying the city’s costs for improving their wastewater treatment plant and lagoon, $300,000 would go towards debris removal and $500,000 would go towards the improvements made to the Brignell well. An additional $1,500,000 would go towards reconstruction of Brookway Boulevard and $725,000 would go towards installing safety fences along the railroad in downtown Brookhaven. 

Barrett introduced a separate bill, SB2113, to go towards infrastructure projects in Monticello. Under the bill, $700,000 would be appropriated with $500,000 for the design, construction and paving of a frontage road along the south side of US84. The remaining $200,000 would go towards a multi-use facility featuring showers, bathrooms and a dressing area for Atwood Water Park.

Sen. Andy Berry introduced a bill requesting $1,500,000 from the state general fund to go towards projects at Camp Kamassa. Readers should be familiar with the camp which has a mission of connecting the handicapped and disabled with Mississippi’s outdoors. 

Mississippi Outdoor Stewardship Trust Fund has helped with funding for projects at the camp the last couple of years. SB2111 states the appropriations would go towards matching funds under federal programs.
