BROOKHAVEN — Temperatures are expected to reach a high of 44 Wednesday before plummeting back below freezing tonight. A similar pattern will continue through Saturday of dangerous cold weather.
The National Weather Service warns dangerous cold could continue into Thursday morning with wind chills around 15 to 20 degrees. Hypothermia is possible with prolonged exposure. There is a threat to unprotected pipes.
However, winter weather originally thought to impact Lincoln County is no longer forecast. NWS Jackson published a new graphic Wednesday morning showing the winter weather impact will end at the Copiah County Line with wintry precipitation.
A winter storm watch has already been issued for counties in north Mississippi.
Lincoln County is forecast to have a 100 percent chance of precipitation Thursday night and Friday. The rain could total between two inches to three inches of rainfall in a 24 hour window from Thursday night into Friday night. NWS Jackson does not list any potential wintry precipitation such as sleet, snow or freezing rain in their forecast for Lincoln County.
Brookhaven Fire Department Chief Jeff Ainsworth gave a fire safety public service announcement in a Board of Alderman meeting Tuesday night.
“I would like everyone in this cold weather to be aware with what you are heating with,” Ainsworth said. “Watch your heaters,. Just be careful.”
