BROOKHAVEN — Residents will eventually have access to a new push notification system for weather alerts, road closures and other announcements. Lincoln County Board of Supervisors voted to approve payment for the new system.
Lincoln County Emergency Management Agency Director Chris Reid said the system is called Hyper-Reach and is currently used by nearby Adams and Pike Counties. It will cost Lincoln County $8,100 a year for the service.
As previously reported by The Daily Leader, Hyper-Reach will send area specific weather alerts from the National Weather Service and get information out much quicker than social media can. Residents could sign up online to get text alerts or download the Hyper-Reach App and receive push notifications. It is unknown when the alert system will be live for Lincoln County.
The decision comes a week after a line of severe storms spawned four tornadoes which affected Lincoln County. One of those tornadoes was only recently added to a growing list of confirmed tornadoes. The newly reported EF1 touched down in southeast Lincoln County and lasted six minutes covering 2.6 miles with a max width of 400 feet. Wind speeds maxed out at 100 mph.
The Daily Leader will provide an update when the alert system is set up for Lincoln County and how residents can sign up.
