Joseph ‘JR’ Richard Erwin

Joseph (J.R.) Richard Erwin of Bogue Chitto, MS., passed away peacefully on December 19, 2024 in Cleburne, Tx. while on an extended stay with his daughter. J.R. was born on July 6, 1937 in Independence, LA. to William and Ruby Hutchinson Erwin. He graduated from Independence High in 1955. J.R. then joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1956 and served until 1959. He obtained a business degree from LSU and went on to work as a hospital administrator for over 20 years. He was a longtime member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and served as an elder and treasurer. The oldest of 6 children, J.R. loved his family and was present at every family function. He could be heard frequently bragging on his grandchildren, nieces, or nephews.

J.R. was an avid LSU fan and enjoyed both football and baseball. J.R is survived by his wife, Marva Erwin of Bogue Chitto, MS, his daughter, Dawn Phillips and son-in-law Craig of Rio Vista, Tx.  Grandchildren, James Wait and wife Kimi of Colleyville, Tx, Joseph Wait and wife Tiffany of Oklahoma City, OK; and Jonathan Wait and wife Jennifer of Carrollton, Tx. 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Ruby Erwin, brother William Erwin Jr., sister Catherine Erwin Morgan, sister Margaret Erwin Watts, sister Marie Erwin Smith, and sister Eva Lois Erwin Smith.

Visitation was at Brookhaven Funeral Home in Brookhaven, MS, 9:30-11:00 a.m. on December 29, 2024 followed by funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Interment followed at Montgomery Baptist Church Cemetery.
