BROOKHAVEN — Ole Brook gave up one touchdown in the dying seconds of a 38-7 win over North Pike on senior night. Brookhaven shut down the Jags and flew to the football on defense.
The Panthers forced two interceptions and returned both for touchdowns. North Pike forced the first turnover of the game and recovered a fumble in Panther’s territory. However, the Jaguars could not advance the football and turned it over on downs.
A punting battle ensued as teams swapped field positions until the Panthers mounted a drive scoring on a two yard rush by Randy Jones with 7:03 in the second quarter. Which would be the only score of the first half.
Zakobi Washington recovered a fumble for Brookhaven in the third quarter which eventually led to a touchdown. Jaden Allen connected with Samarion Buckley on a 35-yard touchdown pass to go up 14-0 with 8:17 in the third quarter.
Caiden Quarles scored the third touchdown of the game on a 27 yard rush for Brookhaven to make it 21-0 with 5:57 in the third quarter. DJ Washington, a junior, made his second career interception and first interception returned for a touchdown moments later.
“It felt great to get a pick and take it all the way to help the team win,” Washington said. “Our coaching and game plan were behind our effort. We just really executed what we did at practice and won in the game.”
His touchdown put Brookhaven up 28-0 with 0:32 left in the third quarter.
Crews Stewart nailed a 27 yard field goal to give Brookhaven a 31-0 lead with 5:22 in the fourth quarter. Seconds later, Jamaal Brown intercepted a pass and took it 15 yards for a touchdown to put Brookhaven up 38-0 with 5:13 left in the fourth quarter.
North Pike’s last second touchdown spoiled a shutout. Brookhaven improved to 9-1 with the win and will face Natchez next Thursday on the road. Washington said he believes Brookhaven has a physical advantage against Natchez.
“We will have to read our keys and stay humble,” Washington said.
Next year, Washington will be in the shoes of his fellow senior teammates. They were recognized before the game with family and played their last guaranteed home game.
“The seniors mean a lot. They bring a lot of energy to this team and bring a lot to the program and make us all better,” Washington said. “I’m just ready to get better and better every year. We want to dominate and make the right plays and I want to help my team win.”
