Rain is on the way for Halloween night

BROOKHAVEN — There is a solid chance of rain to fall in Lincoln County on Halloween. If rain does come, it would help alleviate the bone dry conditions.
According to the National Weather Service, there is a 70 percent chance of precipitation in Lincoln County Thursday. Showers are likely and a thunderstorm is possible in the afternoon which could bring between 0.10 to 0.25 inches of rain. Halloween night could be a little wet as rain chances are around 50 percent up from Monday’s forecast.
Severe weather does threaten parts of southwest Mississippi Thursday according to the National Weather Service. However, Lincoln County is not forecast to see any isolated severe storms.
Friday’s rain chances increased by 20 percent. There is now a 50 percent chance of precipitation with showers and thunderstorms possible.
Mostly sunny weather will return Saturday and Sunday.
The consecutive dry days streak reached 34 Tuesday night placing as the 6th longest streaks in recorded history for this area. The likely rain chances come at a time where drought conditions continue to develop in Lincoln County. Dependent on rainfall Thursday, this could be one of the driest Octobers in recorded history for the area. As long as less than 0.24 inches fall Thursday then Oct. 2024 will be in the top ten driest Octobers in recorded history for the area.
According to the national drought monitor, 100 percent of Lincoln County is considered abnormally dry which is the first stage of drought development. A new drought map will be released Thursday morning.
Volunteer firefighters fought seven wildfires over the weekend and fought a couple more Monday. Lincoln County officials are asking residents to not burn until conditions improve. Fuel moisture is still very dry. USFS reports there needs to be at least six inches of rain for Lincoln County’s soil moisture to return to normal levels.
