The Mississippi Breast and Cervical Cancer Program is a program that provides financial assistance for mammograms and pap smears to Mississippi residents who are uninsured, under-insured, or without third-party payers such as Medicaid or Medicare Part B. Women ages 21-64 who have lived in the state for at least 12 consecutive months, and whose households are at or below 250 percent of the Federal Poverty Level are eligible.

Women age 21 or older should be screened for cervical cancer. Women age 40 or older should have breast cancer screenings. For more information about the program, call 800-721-7222 or visit msdh.ms.gov.

About 400 women die each year in Mississippi from breast cancer. From 2016 to 2020, more than 11,000 female breast cancer cases were reported in the state. Mississippi has one of the highest breast cancer death rates in the nation.

In the United States, breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among non-white women, and the third leading cause of death in white women. Approximately one of every eight women will develop breast cancer within their lifetimes. Eighty percent of all cases are found in women over the age of 50.

Major risk factors other than age are women who are overweight, have had cancer before, have a family history of breast cancer, have not had a child, or started families after the age of 30.
