Museum Educator wins MSTA Outstanding Informal Educator Award

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) is proud to announce that Sabrina Cummings, an Outreach Conservation Educator at the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, received the Mississippi Science Teachers Association (MSTA) “2024 Informal Educator of the Year” award at the organization’s conference in Biloxi this week.

Angel Rohnke, Director of MDWFP’s Museum of Natural Science, presented the award.

“We are incredibly proud of Sabrina for receiving the MSTA Informal Educator of the Year award,” Rohnke said. “Her dedication to inspiring curiosity and a love for science in students of all ages is truly remarkable. Sabrina’s passion for hands-on learning brings science to life and makes a lasting impact on our state.”

Cummings has been an Outreach Conservation Educator since 2015 serving in southwest Mississippi and in the Museum. As a dedicated conservation educator, she provides valuable resources to classroom teachers and students, helping to connect classroom curriculum with real world experiences. Sabrina holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education and a Master’s degree in Environmental Biology. Before the Museum, Sabrina taught in the classroom at the high school and university levels and worked as a field biologist for an environmental engineering group. She visited a Brookhaven Farmer’s Market this summer.

“I’m thrilled to receive this award from my peers at MSTA,” Cummings said. “Teaching others about the wonders of science and the importance of conservation is my passion, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to help inspire the next generation of nature enthusiasts and scientists.”
