BROOKHAVEN — Sunshine, blue clear skies and low humidity remain in the forecast with no chance of rain in sight. Tropical cyclone activity is also not expected in the next 48 hours or seven days.

National Weather Service in Jackson does not show any chance of rain coming to the area through next Tuesday. Calm winds have helped lessen wildfire danger in southwest Mississippi but people are still asked to refrain from burning. Dry fuels and low humidity could allow for fires to escape and get out of control.

Drought conditions are expected to continue to develop in Lincoln County. An updated map from the United States Drought Monitor shows 100 percent of Lincoln County is abnormally dry, which is the first stage of drought development.

NWS Jackson records state this is the 29th consecutive dry day. Depending on when the streak ends, 2024 could end up in the top 10 of consecutive days of no rain. According to records, 73 days of no rain, ending on Dec. 4, 1924, is the longest streak in NWS Jackson’s recorded history.

If there is no rainfall recorded in October then Oct. 2024 would join Octobers in 1904, 1924, 1952, 1963, 2005 with no recorded rainfall. Even with a little rainfall, this year could stay in the top 10 driest Octobers in NWS Jackson’s record book.

This year also had a nine day streak of measurable rainfall ending on July 26, 2024 is the ninth longest streak of rainfall in NWS Jackson’s record book.
