Loyd Star dominates Trojans up front

LOYD STAR — Amite County had speed but they didn’t have the physical dominance needed to win at the point of attack. Loyd Star beat the Trojans 30-6 to improve to 5-2 this season and 2-0 in district.

Head Coach Adam Smith and the Loyd Star team are not fully satisfied yet. They have a huge game against district rivals Bogue Chitto.

The Hornets first offensive drive lasted around 10 minutes and covered 94 yards before Jordyn Kees powered his way for a two yard score. Cooper Creel caught a swinging gate pass for a two point conversion with 11:54 in the 2Q to go up 8-0.

Amite County responded with an 80 yard touchdown rush. Loyd Star was not phased and marched down the field. Phillip Ross Spencer scored on a two yard touchdown rush. Kees kept the ball on a swinging gate draw for the two point conversion. Loyd Star led 16-6 with 6:48 in the second quarter.

Amite County marched down the field in the second half and it looked like the Hornets had no answer. Junior defensive lineman Joe Taylor stepped up and made a huge tackle for a loss.

“They had been running the ball really good I could tell the o-lineman was fixing to pull. I chased him and it led me to the ball carrier,” Taylor said. “It was a big momentum change. It feels great for hard work to pay off, when you know you are fixing to make a good play. Sisco keeps me up on stuff. We watch film every day during break.”

Danny Sisco is the team’s defensive coordinator and spends much of his time shouting directions and trying to get players lined up.

Amite County fumbled the snap on fourth down and the Hornets got the football back and kept the Trojans from scoring. Loyd Star marched down the field and Kees capped the drive off with a 24 yard touchdown rush.

A swinging gate pass to Creel led to another two point conversion. Loyd Star led 24-6 with 7:17 in the fourth quarter.

Amite County tried airing out the football but the plan backfired. Anthony “Wild man,” Humphrey intercepted a pass over his shoulder, turned and raced 40 yards up the field to set up the next scoring drive.

Loyd Star scored on a 23 yard touchdown pass from Ross Spencer to Tristan Fortenberry. The two point conversion was no good.

Amite County was unable to score again in the game as they lost 30-6.

Loyd Star’s win means next week’s Possum Bowl will also be for district. Smith told his team he wants that Possum and he wants the district championship.

Taylor said the team has to stay focused on the football game this week. They will need to dominate Bogue Chitto physically to win.

“If we stay focused and keep grinding I think we can make a good playoff run,” Taylor said. “If we can stay focused and avoid injuries.”
