BROOKHAVEN — Firefighters with the Zetus Volunteer Fire Department responded to reports of a garbage truck on fire Wednesday morning. The fire was knocked down initially by the garbage truck driver using an extinguisher and volunteers soaked down the tires and brakes to prevent further flare ups.

Jonathan Alford said the tires were smoking and hot when Zetus units arrived on scene at Chestnut Lane and Auburn Drive SW. Timmy Nations used a hand line to soak down any hotspots for about 20 minutes until the Zetus Volunteer Fire Department cleared the scene.

The garbage truck is owned by Arrow Disposal Service Inc. and it was not immediately clear what the extent of the damage was.

Alford said he encourages people to carry a fire extinguisher, know how to use it and utilize the fire extinguisher until firefighters can get on scene.

Nations said he encourages people to join their local volunteer fire department whether it be Bogue Chitto, East Lincoln, Heucks Retreat, Hog Chain, Loyd Star, New Sight, Ruth or Zetus Fire Department.

Dedicated volunteers are always needed especially during the day and they do not have to actively fight fires to serve their community. Mechanics, drivers and pump operators are other needs for fire departments.
