BROOKHAVEN — Clean, free flowing soccer was the key to Brookhaven Academy’s 8-0 win over Mt. Salus Academy (Clinton). Kyndra Quinn, a junior striker, scored four goals in the match Thursday afternoon.

According to MaxPreps, she is first in Mississippi and ninth in the nation with 61 points, two points for a goal and one point for an assist. Quinn’s goals Thursday may have bumped her up to fourth in the nation in points.

Quinn was not the only player who found the back of the net. Presley Day scored the first goal of the match following some wonderful passes in the box as Mt. Salus failed to clear a corner kick. Day is a seventh grader.

Camielle Calcote crossed the ball to Quinn to lead to the second goal just a couple of minutes later. Quinn would finish off another chance when Mt. Salus failed to clear the back line and would score a couple of minutes later after cutting through the defense. She added her fourth goal of the contest before the half ended to make it 5-0.

Susanna Tate opened the second half with a goal to make it 6-0 and her sister Mary Anson Tate scored a goal after a shot on target slipped through the goalie’s gloves. Mary Anson plays out on the wing so it is not common for her to score, although she is a creative player and creates chances.

The goal was her ninth one of the season. Her sister could be heard congratulating “Bug,” on the goal. Mary Anson said her sister has always called her Susanna’s nickname simply Su or SuSu.

The last goal of the game was declared an own goal after a cross bounced across the box and the keeper misjudged it. Brookhaven Academy used passing and movement to create most of the eight goals.

“We talk really well. We all get along and the ball movement has been good,” Mary Anson said.

Brookhaven Academy has three more district games left to play. They will travel next Tuesday to play Parklane at 7 p.m. followed by a road trip Thursday to play Cathedral at 5:30 p.m.

Brookhaven Academy’s final district game and senior night will be against Oak Forest on Oct. 1 at 5:30 p.m. The match could determine who wins district and who has home field advantage going into the playoffs.

“There is some pressure for Oak Forest but it has been very fun getting this far,” Mary Anson said.

Head Coach Alex Brown said the squad has been learning, growing and improving as the season has progressed. As the season winds down, he added the squad needs to improve on the small things.

Oak Forest has some quick athletes so the girls will need to be better at letting the ball do the work for them with passing rather than trying to dribble through defenders.

“The girls are continuing to improve each day and each game. Our patterns of play and our off the ball movement was outstanding tonight,” Brown said. “I’m really proud of the girls. They played great football tonight.”
