MBI identifies suspect who was killed following fatal officer shooting

SUMMIT — Authorities have identified the suspect who was killed following the fatal shooting of a Summit police officer Thursday afternoon.

Lincoln County resident Troy Floyd, who ran for Lincoln County Sheriff in 2023, was shot and killed in the line of duty Thursday afternoon. Floyd and two other officers were shot and injured and the suspect was killed in an incident in Summit.

Mississippi Bureau of Investigations identified the suspect who was shot and killed in the incident by officers as Usher Leonard, 25.

Floyd graduated from Brookhaven High School in 1991 and lived in the Clear Branch community. 

He worked as a jailer, patrol officer and parole agent with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Mississippi Department of Corrections, Wesson and Summit Police Departments. His career in law enforcement spanned 27 years. 

Pike County Coroner Rashad David Taylor gave a brief statement Thursday evening about Floyd. 

“We have Floyd’s family and local law enforcement in our hearts and in our prayers. Especially for his family,” Taylor said.

 

What we know

According to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, Summit Police officers were working a checkpoint near West Railroad Avenue, when a car approached and a passenger presented a weapon, shooting at the officers. Floyd, who ran for Lincoln County Sheriff in 2023, was struck and killed by the gunfire.

Two McComb Police officers arrived and exchanged gunfire with the subject. Both officers received non-life-threatening injuries, and the subject was fatally shot. The officers were identified as Joey Roberts and Tyler Harvey. Officer Roberts was wounded in one leg and was unable to return fire.

It is unknown what led to the confrontation, which occurred near Piggly Wiggly supermarket on Hwy. 51, one block from Summit’s Robb Street.

MBI is currently assessing this critical incident and gathering evidence. Upon completing the investigation, agents will share their findings with the Attorney General’s Office.

Lincoln County Baptist Association will host a prayer rally Saturday, Aug. 10 at 7 p.m. for Floyd at Easthaven’s cross.
