Officers will investigate, arrest anyone aiding 14-year-old fugitive

BROOKHAVEN — One arrest was made Tuesday in connection to a 14-year-old fugitive who allegedly shot and killed a 23-year-old man in June. Brookhaven Police Department initially gave the family time to turn the suspect in.
United States Marshal Service confirmed they were assisting Brookhaven Police Department with the case but did have any additional information. At this time, no identifying name nor description of the suspect has been given.
Collins said the suspect could be anywhere and must have gotten help due to his age. He added Brookhaven Police Department will work with any agency they can to bring the juvenile in. The Brookhaven Police Department is actively collecting evidence in regards to people helping the 14-year-old suspect evade law enforcement.
“We feel like he has to have people helping him. One arrest was made today for obstruction of justice,” Collins said. “We will collect evidence and arrest anyone who is helping this suspect.”
The deadly shooting occurred near apartments at 209 Pennington Street on June 22. Lincoln County Coroner Blake Wallace identified the victim as William Young. Wallace told The Daily Leader Saturday night it is believed an altercation led to the shooting. Collins added the victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds in an interview on June 23..
Since Jan. 1, 2024, Brookhaven has had six shootings.
