BROOKHAVEN — A new grocery store will come to Lincoln County this year. ALDI confirmed plans to open a location in Brookhaven in April and work is underway for renovating the space.
ALDI’s PR firm confirmed the news a store was coming to Brookhaven around the time the grocery store Save-A-Lot closed at 840 Brookway Boulevard. Around the same time, 601-Sports moved down the sidewalk to the former Rite-Aid building where it is open at 820 Brookway Boulevard.
The location where Save-A-Lot and 601-Sports formerly were is nearly completely gutted. The brick facade, windows, floor and walls were removed. Construction crews are working to renovate the space to open.
Heavy equipment clashes in the background as men work. From the parking lot, sparks and a glow on a protective welding helmet can be seen. Building materials are spread out as a complete overhaul is underway.
Since April’s news, questions of when ALDI will open remain. Heather Moore, Loxley Division Vice President of Aldi, could not provide any new details in May. The company has not responded to questions as of press time.
“We are excited to confirm that we are expecting to open our first Brookhaven store later this year,” Moore said in May. “At this time, we don’t have any additional information to share but will stay close in the coming months as more updates are made available.”
ALDI announced earlier this year it planned to open about 800 new stores across the country. The southeastern US is one of the regions ALDI is focusing on opening stores in.
