New commissioners headline July MDWFP meeting

JACKSON — Newly appointed Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks commissioners Todd Harriston and Colin Maloney will be on the board for their first meeting Thursday. The Daily Leader previously reported their appointment by Gov. Tate Reeves to replace Leonard Bentz and Bill Cossar in June.
The commission will meet Thursday at 10:30 a.m. there is no educational session this month according to the meeting agenda. MDWFP’s agenda states the meeting will be held at their headquarters at 1505 Eastover Drive in Jackson.
At the end of the June meeting, Scott Coopwood was voted to take over the commission chairman position vacated by Cossar. MDWFP Executive Director Lynn Posey will swear in the new commissioners at the conclusion of the opening prayer.
MDWFP listed no public comments on the agenda. Jason Thompson, Director of Administrative Services, will present information about license sales and administrative license fee increases.
Col. Jerry Carter, Chief of Law Enforcement, will give an update on law enforcement and a reinstatement request for a hunter.
According to the agenda, Brian Ferguson, Parks Chief of Staff, will give an update on park projects. It is likely one of his updates will be about Percy Quinn State Park in McComb.
MDWFP plans to host a grand re-opening of the state park on August 2 to celebrate the major renovation projects there at 8 a.m. Five newly renovated cabins and 102 new campsites for RVs were updated in the project.
