BROOKHAVEN — A scrap yard office and scales caught fire Sunday night around 9 p.m. in Brookhaven. No one was injured in the fire and the owner of the scrap yard was out of town at the time.
Brookhaven Fire Chief Jeff Ainsworth said the fire was at McKenzie Metals near 983 Sawmill Lane. Firefighters left the scene at 11:30 p.m. after keeping the blaze contained to the office and scale house. Those two structures were a total loss, Ainsworth said.
He said the business owner was not in town when the fire started and there was no reason for why a fire would start. With no witnesses to the blaze, Ainsworth said they will try to do their due diligence with the investigation for the owners “peace of mind.”
“That is where we are at right now. The State Fire Marshal Office will be here in the morning. It will be under state investigation,” Ainsworth said. “We will try to get a cause and determination from the State Fire Marshal.”
