BROOKHAVEN — Brookhaven Police Chief Kenny Collins said the juvenile suspected of shooting and killing a man Saturday remains free Wednesday. The police department is working with the family to turn in the suspect or for the teenager to turn himself in. 

Collins said the department will contact U.S. Marshals if he or the family do not cooperate and he flees the state. 

On Sunday, the department released additional details about a deadly shooting in Brookhaven Saturday night. Collins said a man was killed with multiple gunshot wounds. KDMC was initially dispatched to the scene.

A call of shots fired came in around 8:05 p.m. Saturday at the apartments at 209 Pennington St. The incident was close to where Pennington intersects with Furr Avenue. Collins said it has no connection to a fight which occurred near the Dr. A.L. Lott Sportsplex. 

Lincoln County Coroner Blake Wallace confirmed the shooting was fatal following an altercation Saturday and William Young, 23, was the victim. He said Young’s family was notified Saturday night.

Collins said the suspect was 14-to-15 years old. Brookhaven Police Department is working to bring the juvenile into custody but can not release further details because it is a juvenile. 

“My heart goes out to Young’s family and the 14-year-old’s family,” Collins said.

The shooting remains under investigation.
