Severe weather, heat stress threaten area

BROOKHAVEN — The National Weather Service warns heat stress conditions will continue today and severe storms could move in this afternoon. Brookhaven’s high is 93 with a forecasted heat index of 103.
A heat advisory is currently in effect for Lincoln County and Southwest Mississippi until 8 p.m. according to the NWS. The area is under an elevated risk of heat stress conditions. High temperatures will be in the low 90s with heat indices reaching 105 to 110. Heat exhaustion is likely with prolonged outdoor activity.
The dangerous heat could continue Friday through Monday.
At the same time, NWS warns of severe storms. Lincoln County is at a marginal risk of severe storms this afternoon. Isolated severe storms are possible from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. with damaging wind gusts and hail up to a quarter in size.
Thursday has an increased chance of rain. NWS forecasts an 80 percent chance of precipitation and a high of 89.
Friday to Tuesday rain chances will fluctuate anywhere between 30 to 50 percent according to the forecast.
