BROOKHAVEN — Lincoln County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Monday morning in a regularly scheduled meeting to offer $2.745 million for the city’s 20 percent interest in the courthouse. The City of Brookhaven started steps to leave the Lincoln County Courthouse to find a new home for city hall in May 2023. 

It is important to note while the County started planning how they would handle the City leaving the courthouse they are not making the City leave. It is likely Brookhaven will move government offices to the former Hartman-Harrigill Funeral Home at 101 W Chickasaw St. 

Lincoln County Attorney Greg Malta said their proposal to the City is a buyout of $2.745 million to be paid in full by Dec. 31, 2025 or the date the City has vacated the premises, whichever is the later date. 

Brookhaven will vote on the proposal Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the regularly scheduled board of aldermen meeting. If the offer is accepted, it would be subject to approval by the Attorney General’s office. 

Rico Cain, president of the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), spoke to the board before the decision. He asked if the courthouse buyout would affect taxpayers. 

Lincoln County administrator Daniel Calcote assured him the plan is it would not.  

“We don’t plan for there to be any changes. We will be paying off older bonds and I would hope this would fit into the budget,” Calcote said. “Our goal is to not raise taxes. It should not happen.” 

Calcote explained after the meeting the $2.745 million would be included in a new bond.
