BROOKHAVEN — Lincoln County’s Board of Supervisors had little action to take outside of a few infrastructure updates and an agreement to house city inmates in the jail. Currently, Brookhaven pays $35 per day per city inmate.
Supervisors approved an updated interlocal agreement to house city inmates in the county jail.
Lincoln County Board Attorney Greg Malta said the cost of housing will now go up to $50 per day per city inmate. The agreement will be in effect for one year and was approved on May 15, 2024 by the City according to the document.
Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing said after a meeting in March that city inmates became the county’s responsibility once they were bonded over to a grand jury. The new interlocal agreement states an inmate remains a city inmate until they are indicted on a felony charge. This will change how many days Brookhaven is billed for the housing of city inmates.
