CASEYVILLE — Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating possible human remains found in Lincoln County Saturday. Sheriff Steve Rushing said they are waiting on the Mississippi Crime Lab for any additional information.
A deer hunter discovered possible human remains in northwest Lincoln County at approximately 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office was notified that a hunter had located possible human remains near a road leading into a wooded area on Wooley Trail. Part of the road runs through Homochitto National Forest land.
Rushing said they are still working on leads for the investigation while waiting on results from the crime lab. Lincoln County coroner Clay McMorris said he did not have an update and was waiting on more information.
Initial information indicated that no one had been to that location since about May 2023. Deputies responded to the scene and then requested the assistance of the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations, the Mississippi Crime Lab response team and the Lincoln County Coroner’s Office, Rushing said.
The remains were recovered by the crime lab and sent to the State Medical Examiner’s office for further testing. Due to the condition of the remains no further description as to sex, race, or how long they had been at the scene is available without further testing by the state lab.
