BROOKHAVEN — Senior student athletes Mallory Martin, Brookhaven Academy, and Bryce Smith, Brookhaven High School, were named winners of a prestigious scholarship last week. The Heisman High School Scholarship is awarded to the nation’s most esteemed male and female athletes.
Readers may remember Smith from winning the KDMC Comeback Player award earlier this fall. Smith suffered a brutal knee injury in the 2022 football season and wasn’t sure if he was going to play again. Remarkably, he managed to make a comeback and is leading the Panthers as a kicker and tight end this season. Smith was selected as a state finalist.
Martin helped captain the Brookhaven Academy soccer team to its deepest playoff run in program history. Her attacking play and experience were the engine for the BA soccer team. She also plays basketball for the Lady Cougars. Her soccer head coach Alex Brown had high praises for her during the soccer season. Martin was selected as a school winner of the Heisman Scholarship for Brookhaven.
“She works hard. Even though she doesn’t want the attention or the glory, she deserves it,” Brown said after Martin scored a hat trick in September.
Martin hopes to study Chemical Engineering in college. Smith plans to study engineering or political science and hopes to go to a service academy like the Naval Academy.
